17) We Went to a Local Maker Fest #NewThingEveryDay

maker-web-box2A few weeks ago the family attended the Minneapolis St. Paul Mini Maker Faire at the State Fairgrounds. I live Tweeted it and blogged about it over on ToolGuyd. So today we went to a more low key Maker Fest at the Highland Park Community Center.

Not only wast this event smaller, but the kids had more one on one attention from many of the makers. My daughter started out making a top from recycled materials provided by Art Start. They recycle scraps, overstock, factory rejects, etc. You can then go into their store and buy supplies by the bagful.

While my daughter was making her top, my wife took my son over to a table where the woman was showing him how to make art out of aluminum rings. When my daughter finished her top, she joined him and made one herself. As they were doing crafting, my wife talked at length to a local artist that was in the same room.

After a bathroom break I took my son down to the gym to see what was there. He ended up at the TinkeringWithLego table the rest of the time making tops and high-wire balancing toys. My daughter build her own birdhouse, made her own cookie cutter, and build her own paper speaker in the meanwhile.

While there wasn’t as much cool stuff as Maker Faire, it was definitely a more intimate experience.
